My Pink Saturday post is very simple this week,
but features one of my favorite, and quite interesting pieces, to me....
I have long desired to start a collection of Hotel China.
I love the emblems and the weightiness of it. (Is that even a word? LOL)
Unfortunately, I only have one piece, but it has quite a significance.
Years ago, I bought a trash can or some kind of canister at an auction. When bidding on it, I assumed it was empty.
However, there were several nice items inside, this HOTEL CAPE FEAR plate being one of them.
Imagine my pleasant surprise! :)
I don't know near the history of Wilmington as Kevin does, he lived in the Historic District for years when he was young.
In 1974, when Kevin was around 6-7 years old, he sat on the sidewalk across from the HOTEL CAPE FEAR with his Grandaddy Coot, and watched it being demolished.
Now wasn't that a coincidence?

ReplyDeleteI lived in Jacksonville for several years in the late 80's before moving west to the foothills. I loved visiting Wilmington, driving along the old brick streets with the tree canopy and downtown area with it's historic buildings. What an incredible find you have! The plate is lovely, hard to beat a horse drawn carriage image! It's a great starter piece for building a collection. I hope you find many more interesting hotel china plates. Now I'll be on the look out for some too *smiles*

Morning, Rhonda! Oh, what a beautiful plate with history behind it. Seems we're both into history lessons today! I love both the movies of "Cape Fear" - the oldie with Robert Mitchem and Gregory Peck and the newer version with Jessica Lang and can't think of guy's name at the moment. Oh, Nick Nolte Anyway, up until a few years ago I didn't know there was a real Cape Fear.

I love hotel china, and train and bus china, but it is hard to find and usually pricey. I cannot believe you found that beautiful plate inside a can you bought! How fun to get such a special treasure and not even know you were getting it. laurie

It sounds like no cavalry was need after all! I really like this plate. I have a couple of restaraunt plates that were in my grandma's Inn. They mean a lot to me just bz they were grandma's. This plate is very nice. Have you noticed how small the plates used to be? No wonder I can remember my dad eating two plates of food at dinner and not getting fat!!

Every few years they get new dishes & the old ones are just discarded!...perfect time to scoop them up! :)....Loved your story about your beautiful plate!...Havea great day!....Heidi XO
ReplyDeleteOh Scooter....you ain't gotta make up stories about where you got the plate sweetie...just go ahead and admit you swiped it from the hotel...we have heard of people taking hotel towels & all the little soaps..we'll forgive you for the plate! lol lol That is a beautiful plate sis and the history with it about your hubby being there that day to watch it being torn down...oh how sweet is that! ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that hotel china would be difficult to collect. Hotels wouldn't like to give pieces away, so you might have to hire a cat burglar. Aren't cat burglars expensive?

ReplyDeleteI don't know the Cape Fear area - like others, I just know the movies. Mitchum and DeNiro are so menacing, even the name "Cape Fear" gives me a chill.
It would be a good thing, I think, to go there and get a whole new mental image of the place - it sounds fabulous. Thank you for sharing the plate.

What a fun surprise...you gotta love "bonus" stuff with your purchase. And make sure you don't judge the color on your wall to quickly. I've painted rooms and HATED them the first couple days...then totally fall in love with them once the room is completely done!

ReplyDeleteI, too, have wanted to collect hotel china AND hotel silverware. Would just love it. But..I don't have any places left in my entire house to try to show these things...and I am not one to collect and then put it in a drawer or a closet! Gotta show it...Gosh, I am getting all excited about it again..let's go look on Ebay !!!!!:O)
