Mad Dash for the Stash...

I'm sure by now, you all are getting tired of stories about my kids! But they are some funny young'uns, and I never know what new adventure lies ahead with them. Of course, I'm biased, ....Please humor me as I share yet another tale. LOL!

Yesterday, David and Josh went to help Uncle Larry and Aunt Janet move some furniture out of a storage unit. As they were pulling up, a "National Potato Chip" truck was driving away from the dumpster inside the storage facility. I bet you know where this story is heading...LOL!

Yep, they went dumpster diving for chips! The potato chip company evidently rents a storage unit there too, and was discarding their old inventory. Which actually some were not out of date yet, and those that were, were just a few days old. Check out their stash they rescued from the dumpster below. Kevin and I were in town, and they were so excited, they took a picture of their loot on Josh's cell phone and sent it us. David climbed inside the dumpster and had to walk over, "tons and tons of cardboard!" Oh, the sacrifices we make for a good deal! LOL!

They brought all the chips back to my house and divied them up. Uncle Larry took the "hot" flavored chips, and this is what was left. Last night, David said that he was keeping one big bag of Doritos, and setting up a stand outside to sell the rest. But by morning, he had decided that "He loves his life right now!" ...and is eating chips as hard as he can before they expire!

David even got a huge bag of Funyuns onion rings just for me!

Now how's this for Dumpster Diving...

They probably didn't read the posted sign either! :)

(Pictures other than mine were borrowed from Google Images)

I went yard saling and to the flea market this morning... which was a real "dive" today! LOL!

I did get the two medium size urns for $5. The lady was asking $10 for the set. I was tickled for that one good find. I hit the farmer's market after, and bought peanuts to boil, fresh okra, and pears to make a sauce with!

I'm off to start cooking! Boiled Peanuts are calling my name...my first for this year!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend so far! ~Rhonda :)

I have heard of boiled peanuts...that must be a regional way of eating them...How long are they cooked and then (if anything) is added.

I bet the boys were excited about dumpster diving for the chips...too bad the chips were not taken to a shelter or food bank instead of just trashing them. I just hate to see food wasted like that.

Have a glorious Sunday.

My son would have loved to stumble upon such a find. He's a Doritos fanatic.

So glad the boys found those chips - how exciting!

I've seen a bread truck dumping lots of bagged breads in the trash before. Most of these companies have decided not to donate expired foods because of possible lawsuits from people claiming to get sick from them.

Boiled peanuts? Never heard of it - you'll have to tell those of us who don't know what it's like.

Good thing it was chips instead of candy...they would have had a sugar high for a month! I'll take a bag of doritos please!

Dumpster divin for chips....now that's a new one! I saw on tv where some rich guy went to a certain dumpster every week for bread! He said he couldn't stand to see it go to waste.....you'd think that stuff could go to shelters.
This is the second time I've heard about boiled peanuts...what do they taste like?
I'm so glad your package arrived intact!

Hugs, DebraK

How sad to think that food companies throw away perfectly good food like that but how great for your kids. I love the urns, what do you think you are going to do with them?

Hugs,
LeAnn:)

My Grandpa used to be the King of Dumpster Diving. It got to be the running joke when we went to visit them that, before we would eat anything we would ask "Where did you get this Grandpa?" Actually he did used to find alot of fruits and veggies that were starting to get too ripe so my grandma would can or make pies ar something out of it. We just didn't want to know where it came from ;-)

You have to explain to me about the boiled peanuts!!! What do you do with them? Do you preserve them? I think this is awesome! As for the dumpster diving....that's too darn funny for words. My husband's work actually has a lock on their dumpster so no one can get in an eat the things they throw out! Liability you know if someone got sick from it. Hope you have a great weekend!

Hi Rhonda,
That was so funny....I've thought about dumpster diving when I've seen good stuff, but the husband hasn't stopped...too funny. At one of my retail jobs, we also had to throw "food/chip/pop in the dumpster. Kinda a waste if you ask me.
Warmly, Deb :)

Ahhh, boiled peanuts. I cannot wait to get back to SC in a couple of weeks and have my daddy cook some boiled peanuts for me. I'm also looking forward to the fried okra, the fried catfish, my daddy's fish stew and some good southern BBQ! I swear, the food alone is enough to make me want to move back down South!

Of course I'm enjoying the weather a little too much out here in Wyoming and getting back to SC and the 100% humidity with 99 degree weather is going to be a huge shock to my system!

My sides ache from laughing so hard at your story about the boys going Dumpster Diving! LOVE the photo of David dangling from the dumpster! Just Hilarious!! You do know that he and Josh are going to want to go DD'ing on a regular basis now! They have found their "drug of choice" for their "high" ... it is just way too funny! I LOVE IT!

Those urns are wonderful and I am sure you'll find the perfect spot for them... you brought back some wonderful memories for me with the mention of boiled peanuts! My Daddy loved them more than I could say... Hmmmm... perhaps I will do a post to share the peanut story about him! ~makes a note to self~

I hope that you and everyone in your dear family are doing well... enjoy the rest of your day, Sweetie... God bless...

That is so funny and my 7 year old would have been right their with them..He is a Chip addict...I am serious too. I really have to limit them and can't keep them in the house or that's all he will eat until they are gone...crumbs and all. I'm not even going to tell him there are such dumpsters out there....how scary for me:)

Great YS finds...nothing in our area...

Enjoy the boiled peanuts...I might have to boil some too...no, I think I'll wait to Sat...Football starts and that would be a good snack:)

Well, our dirty little secret is out now! We joked that David could take the chips to his grandpa to sell at his store! Of course, he wasn't about to part with them. What fun he had digging through the cardboard and pulling out the bags of chips. :-)
